Music is an outlet for students to express themselves and create memorable experiences while doing so. In our classroom, we experience music through singing, instruments, reading and writing, movement, and listening. It is so important for instruments to be an accessible part of a music experience because it really opens up a whole new world for our students. Playing drums allows students to dive into, and learn about rituals, religions, and cultures around the world. Playing instruments also helps to enforce numerous benchmarks in music, including steady beat, reading and writing rhythms, and playing in an ensemble. All of these skills are necessary for students to become successful musicians, or just to develop an understanding and appreciation for music. Lastly, instruments in the classroom help to build self esteem as students have opportunities to play and perform in front of peers.
