In our classroom, we are working hard to promote a joy for reading, and to help each student build stamina for reading independently. We have implemented Independent Daily Reading time in our classroom to build a a drive for reading, but I would love to provide them with books they WANT to read. As students who read below grade level, reading independently can often be discouraging. They are often choosing books that are above their level or books that are not age appropriate for their interests. Graphic novels and high interest-low readability books will give these students books to read that are age appropriate for their interests, and are on a level at which they can understand. Reading can take you to worlds beyond and I want my students to feel that excitement when they find a book they don't want to put down!
