I currently have 55 students in a school with a student population around 700. My students have been identified as intellectually "gifted." My job is to take them beyond the testing focus of the school by teaching them to think critically and to solve complex, "real" problems. Our school lies within a couple of miles of an estuary of the Chesapeake Bay. Life in our region, from manufacturing to agriculture to recreation is dominated by the water around us. Yet, the students are largely ignorant of the fascinating habitats that support the various aspects of this regional ecosystem. My kids get very excited when they can actually get their hands into something. I am working with a team of students on this project and hope to expand the active participation to my entire population and increase the educational impact on the entire student body of the school.
