As we enter the second half of second grade, many of my students have become independent readers. Research has shown the benefits of using culturally relevant texts to teach reading comprehension strategies to students. Not only does the Miami Jackson series feature characters who look and sound like my students in a non-stereotypical manner, it also takes place right here in St. Louis where our school is located! The students have been able to not only see their own experiences mirrored in the text, but also expand their horizons as they learn more about the world they inhabit. We are able to connect the reading to geography, social studies, history, and different family models. Reading the first book has led to so many great conversations about the characters, setting, and events of the book. We would like for each student to engage in a book study where each child may read at their own pace and with their families.
