My classes are about to read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a coming-of-age story set in Afghanistan and the United States. The novel is powerful and eye-opening as it explores social justice issues including ethnic prejudice, poverty, and political unrest. The main character, Amir, is haunted by a decision he made in childhood and wrestles with guilt and forgiveness until an old friend offers him "a way to be good again." By donating supplies to this project, you will partner in my students using their voices and creativity to create awareness about human rights. We will be studying the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights and talking about how those rights apply to current events. At the end of the unit, I would like students to create "kites" out of cardstock that represent one of the rights in the Declaration. I have wonderfully artistic and thoughtful students who will enjoy and learn from this project. After creating their "kites," we will display them in my classroom and other locations in the school for other students to learn from. I am so excited about this opportunity to learn with my students, and we are are grateful for your support.
