The materials received from this project will go to designing and furnishing a space where students can take a moment, breathe, and focus on positive thoughts and feelings. A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found a link between mindfulness and measurable changes in the brain regions involved in memory, learning and emotion. Another NIH-funded researcher reported that mindfulness practices may reduce anxiety and hostility among youth and lead to reduced stress, fewer fights and better relationships. Many people who practice mindfulness report an increased ability to relax, a greater enthusiasm for life and improved self-esteem. Those of us at our school would love to build these traits within our student community. Students will be allowed to sit comfortably and engage in mindful tasks, such as reading, breathing, and doing yoga. They will use the materials within the Mindfulness space to learn strategies to help them deal with their feelings and emotions, so that they can learn to their fullest potential. There will be different areas throughout the room, including a tee-pee for a more personal space, bean bag chairs for reading and breathing, and an art area where students can engage in mindful creations. We would like to fill the room with aromatherapy scents, relaxing sounds, and calm lighting.
