Our students who come as newcomers from different countries often come as readers in their first language. It is up to us to tap those academic skills that they bring with them. Our jobs are to show students that the skills they possess in their native language are useful in English. Doing so gives students valuable confidence as well. If given the proper tools, literacy in a student's first language can be a major advantage for English language learners. Our local library as well as our school library have an inadequate number of books available for my students to help them practice reading in their primary language.

About my class
