According to Florida State University College of Education (2016), “Young children with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics will go on to play an integral role in our nation’s global competitiveness and economic stability. Teachers can foster critical thinking through problem solving in elementary STEM education and provide students with an academic edge over the competition." This is our goal of implementing the Bullpup Exploratorium at our elementary school. The donations will help create our STEM lab and give students the opportunities to learn with real-life situations (problem-based learning). The books are read aloud, are captivating, and are used to kick off STEM challenges by sparking the students’ minds. For example, In What To Do With A Box, a boy, girl, and a dog explore the many ways a large box could be used. The author suggests it could become a library, a car, a boat, or a plane. For the STEM challenge (Think Outside the Box), students choose an empty box and make something useful out of it. (repurpose/reuse). The largest item that needs to be purchased is the small cubby bins which will be used to store supplies. The jumbo craft sticks, LEGO bricks, and Play-Doh will be used by students during STEM challenges to build different items (i.e. structures, towers, boats). The pattern blocks, base ten blocks and math link cubes will be used as resources. They can be used to build with, make works of art out of shapes, and help with math problems for the younger children. The pipe cleaners, masking tape, construction paper, index cards, and glue sticks will all be used during the STEM challenges as another resource. For example, the students would use the construction paper and glue sticks during a paper chain challenge.
