New books will continue to enhance the literature-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really beg to be in. We have crew meetings there, I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. Once a month, we are treated to Flashlight Friday- we wear our pj's, bring a blanket or pillow, pull down the blinds and read with our flashlights. This has been an incredibly easy way to entice students to get excited about reading. Sadly, I do not have enough flashlights and the ones I purchased at the dollar store keep breaking. A whole new set would be incredible! In a classroom with many students who have difficulty sitting still, flexible seating is vital for learning. We work around the room in groups, independently, and read there. It would be so nice to have more options because it's hard to get comfortable and read while sitting on a hard, concrete floor.
