The mission for this project is to provide K-5 students an opportunity to learn how to play piano, by adding a piano lab in the music classroom. Which, in return, will enhance other areas of their education. The Keys to Success is an important project because many students will never have the opportunity to touch, nevertheless learn how to play the piano, due to various financial situations their families may have. Traditional private piano lessons can cost anywhere from $20-$35 per 30 minutes for one-on-one teaching. This project would provide all K-5 students the opportunity for them to learn how to play piano. Learning to read and play the piano has many incredible benefits. Many of these benefits follow into their core classrooms. Hands on instrument playing helps many students with their reading and math skills, while also boosting their test scores. According to recent studies quoted by the National Association for Music Education , “Scientific American’s (2010) board of editors asserted, ‘Studies have shown that assiduous instrument training from an early age can help the brain to process sounds better, making it easier to stay focused when absorbing other subjects, from literature to tensor calculus,’”and, “Music training in childhood fundamentally alters the nervous system such that neural changes persist in adulthood after auditory training has ceased.” Other studies have also shown that instrumental students outperform non instrumental students on testing and in every subject throughout all grades. As a young child, I was fortunate enough for my parents to provide me with private piano lessons, which set a firm foundation of appreciation for the Arts. I want this opportunity for my students. They deserve to find their love for music and the arts too through The Keys to Success Piano Lab.
