Students in our K-5 environmental club have been learning about the negative effects of plastic bags and waste in our community. They see plastic bags everywhere blowing around and polluting our beaches and oceans. Recently, they collected data on the amount of plastic bags used during their family grocery store trip and how many reusable bags could have been used to replaced the plastic ones. The children were astonished to find out that they would have used only three or four reusable bags compared to the thirteen plastic bags! The team has also been collecting plastic bags from community members and weighing the collections in pounds. They have collected over 400 pounds in 1.5 months! These two eye opening experiences have inspired the kids to want to tap into the social consciousness of our school and local community by writing messages on reusable bags and distributing them throughout the area. They realize the future is in their hands and children have voices, too. Their modeling of social responsibility, like sustainability, will continue to help them grow into young adults and see a brighter future knowing they did their part to aid in a greener tomorrow.
