Sensory lighting and flexible seating allows for students to be more in control of their learning. When completing independent work, they choose locations in the classroom that is comfortable for them. The fluorescent lights in my classroom cause headaches and negatively affects my student's sensory needs. Currently, my students have a wide range of negative behaviors because of the "loud" environment of the typical classroom. When students are engaged in behaviors, it leads to the domino effect of other students also having behaviors that impede their learning. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. I have also recently purchased some lights and a tapestry and it has started to help with behaviors. They are making better choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than ever. My students are noticeably more engaged in instruction and less disruptive of their peers when their sensory needs are being met. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The replacement lights for the florescent lights would better meet their needs and decrease behaviors. My district took away my TA's desks with locked drawers so they no longer have any privacy for their personal belongings. This would also remind students not to go into their teacher's belongings. The blankets will help students be comfortable in their learning environment. The comfy seating will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. I have seen how sensory items can positively affect my student's work, demeanor, and behavioral needs. Decreasing environmental triggers and the additional options will help students be the best versions of themselves!
