As we all know, there are days when the daily stress can be overwhelming and cause us all to need a break. This is no different for our students. Here at our elementary school, we are starting a Sensory/Calming Room to meet this very important need of our students. Students have hard days at times and need a place to feel safe to refocus, regroup, and calm themselves to enhance their educational experience. In the Sensory/Calming Room, we will have sensory toys, relaxing lighting, games, books, comfortable seating, and an area where kids can escape for as little as 5 minutes to longer (if needed) to refocus and then return to class to continue learning and being productive in their class environment. How great would this have been when we were kids? I'm sure we all know someone who would have benefited from a room like this when we were younger. The items that we have requested will provide the lighting needs, seating needs, and sensory needs to make our students more successful throughout their day. The bean bag chair will help the students relax and be able to sit without being on a hard surface and uncomfortable. This will promote a calming environment. The weighted blankets will make the students feel like they are being hugged. These blankets will provide the pressure they may need to help them calm down and regroup. The lighting will help the room feel like a ocean wave. The soothing music will encourage students to decompress. The toys and games will also help with the fidgeting that some students may have when they are in an agitated state. The games will also be used as a friendship group to help some students better their educational experience.
