Recent research on educating children has spotlighted motor skills as a crucial factor in school success; not just gross and fine motor, but whole systems, such as vestibular, visual, tactile, etc. Children have less active, free play, today, and more confined, structured experiences, which creates weakened motor skills. As a result, students are unable to sit for long periods of time in chairs, master handwriting, or focus on instruction. I want to teach the whole child, and create a motor lab in my class. I will start this slowly due to the large amount of equipment and space I will need. Therefore, I will begin with chairs that will strengthen their core muscles, and tables rather than desks, for spatial awareness. Whole bodies, Learning minds.
