As a Special Education teacher, I tirelessly rack my brain for answers, interventions, techniques, and methods to help my students soar to success. As you might have guessed it, this can prove to be a challenging task at times. I work with a population of students that have difficulty with the "simplest" of things compared to their peers. They struggle to write their name, they struggle to express themselves, they struggle to cope with emotions, they struggle when asked to perform the same as other students their age. Though some may view these as extreme deficits, I am begging you... Don't DIS the Ability. Our "kids" need to be given a chance to prove themselves. They need to be given the opportunity to explore, engage, and interact with the world around them through sight, sound, and touch. They need to be given the space and environment that will foster and cater to their exact needs and disabilities at any given time. Your generous donations will go towards creating a sensory room for our students at Portsmouth Elementary School. Sensory rooms have been proven to help manage problem behaviors, improve sensory input, and aid in adjusting moods and attitudes. Our sensory room will target specific learning goals and outcomes. Students will have the opportunity to use sight, sound, and touch to address their individual needs. Our students are diagnosed with autism, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, etc. Having a sensory room will directly address their need for social-emotional development in many facets. The sensory input will allow them to correctly respond to stimuli, situations, and circumstances in a way that fosters appropriate development and responses.
