Offering African-American History to a school that is 66% Black was an important choice our school leadership made. In-trusting me with the task of teaching it was a big honor. To get the most out of the class I believe these two biographies will have the impact on my students just as they did on me when I was their age. I look forward to deep discussions that will open their minds at the possibilities they have due to great men and women who came before them. Teaching at a school that 86% of the students live in poverty can be a difficult situation. I have always believed that poverty is not an economic number but a feeling of worthlessness. I think having a sense of pride of where you came from is a great way to escape this mindset.
Reading the stories of the lives of two great Americans like Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X will be a great experience for the young minds in my class. I look forward to them uncovering the trials and tribulations and philosophies both men experienced through their lives.
