I sat down today during tutoring and asked my students, "What do we need in this classroom?" They provided me with a host of titles, suggestions, and recommendations - and our list was born.
The books on this list are texts that the students recommended and asked for themselves. When I attempted to install Independent Reading time in the classroom, I ran into the repeated problem with many of my readers that my classroom library just didn't have the books they wanted. This list will help me fill many gaps in my library.
Also included are some basic classroom supplies. I lose pencils like dogs shed hair - constantly! Many of my students can't afford school supplies, so they come to school needing a pencil every day, and, because I teach middle schoolers, they often lose the morning's pencil before the afternoon has begun. The pencils and highlighters will help with basic classroom learning. The markers and colored pencils will give me greater freedom to assign hands-on projects that will connect our learning to the interests of my more artistically talented and visual students.
