Just like a chemical reaction, there are certain items needed in order for Chemistry students to produce great results. Access to a calculator that can do advanced mathematical functions might be the most important item needed for this reaction to be successful. Many students come to class without a scientific calculator and must borrow one. This puts them at a disadvantage because they are not familiar with each calculator’s keyboard and order of functions. Students would be more successful if they had consistent access to the same calculator. Students need to be able to trust the calculator they use so they can focus on thinking through the problem, not trying to find function buttons. My students and I are asking for a class set of scientific calculators so they can be guaranteed access to a calculator in class. This should give them a level of comfort and familiarity that will help them succeed in class.
