My first grade students are learning to transition to sitting at their desks and attend to group instruction. Instruction is visual and auditory (read-a-loud, instructional video, etc). Keeping students in a calm and engaged state during instruction can be challenging. The fidgets items help students keep their hands busy, encourage and strengthen fine motor development, and provide sensory input. This will provide an incentive for them to transition to their desks, a calming device during instruction, as well as, increase the duration on task. Students with autism enjoy touching and exploring different textured objects, as well as require variations in stimulus.
