This graphic history helps students to gain a perspective on Imperialism that challenges the normal "Rise of the West" narrative. Through centering the experience of Abina Mansa, this graphic history provides an excellent complement to the textbook reading required for the AP World History course. While some students can afford to purchase a copy of this book, many of my students cannot. By obtaining a class set of this book, I will be able to make sure that all my students can have access to this compelling read. The story of Abina Mansa, told in graphic novel format, grabs the curiosity of high school readers. In addition, the essays at the end of the 2nd edition provide students with practice they need with historiography.
