These books will be used in an African American Literature class as students explore contemporary African American voices. This novel has the possibility to change students’ lives, much like it changed mine. My students come from backgrounds with high trauma, high poverty, and many other adverse factors stacked up against them. This true story provides hope and inspiration and the black male narrator is a voice that students can connect to. Studies show that higher engagement leads to higher academic achievement and this book will engage my students and inspire them. Our school does not have the funds to purchase these books on our own, but that doesn’t mean my students shouldn’t have access to them. These books will connect to my culturally relevant and responsive curriculum and will give students the chance to connect with a newer text that they have not previously had access to.
