If children do not feel safe and loved, they are not ready to learn. In our classroom, we focus largely on social-emotional learning, so as they continue on through their education and as adults, they can be more resilient when they face difficulties. Social-emotional learning isn't a skill set that simply develops on its own; it must be taught. I have embarked on a journey of transforming myself and my classroom using the Conscious Discipline methodology by Dr. Becky Bailey. The Feeling Buddies Curriculum, with 31 lessons, will help us learn to self-regulate by me teaching the self-regulation skills and the children teaching their feeling buddy the skill. Even if the children do not currently possess the skill, by teaching their buddy, they are continuing to practice until they can independently use the skill on their own.
