A document camera with an auto scanner will help students significantly with at-home, digital learning. Students will be able to receive explicit instruction as I (the teacher) places a copy of the day's complex text under the document camera during teaching. I am able to model specific strategies by using different colored pens, highlighters, and basic written phrases. Students will be able to make the same markings (annotations) on their own paper. (Note: if students do not have access to a paper copy, they may make the same markings digitally w/Adobe PDF programs). I have found that students are more likely to process new information and learn the skills required for completing tasks when teachers explicitly model examples on their own copy of the given assignment. The scanner feature is phenomenal for maximizing students' learning. When the lesson is complete, I can scan the document I just completed and upload it to my website. Students can access this download this scanned document and use it as a guide when completing independent follow-up work. For students who are absent in class, this tool is extremely beneficial for completing make-up work. I can record my voice and the lesson completed with the document camera to be uploaded on my website. Students will have access to play the lesson again, stop and replay specific points of the lesson, and complete their notes to look just like mine, even if they missed class that day! Overall, this piece of technology will enable my students to learn the difficult skills that often come with the ELA Common Core State Standards by having complete access to direct instruction! By hearing my voice and following along as I mark my very own copy of the day's assignment, they are ready to venture independently!
