Sports are such an important, positive and rewarding experience for young student-athletes. With the school district cutting funding in 2015 to elementary sports, it is so important to continue to keep sports a part of the students’ extracurricular activities at our school. Joining the Chicago Northside Basketball League has allowed our team to play regular, weekly games over a 3 month period, including playoffs against teams from a variety of schools. The league’s focus on fun, fair and competitive play allows for individual athletes and teams to build on their basketball skills over time and in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Student-athletes learn how to bounce back after making a mistake, see their hard work pay off when they are able to box-out for the first time or make their first free throw all while competing against a variety of players. The ability to play a game every week for 10 weeks really gives athletes the time to grow and learn each game with the opportunity to practice a skill and then execute what they learned in their next competition. The opportunity for these young, urban, student-athletes to play in this league is immeasurable. The student-athletes know that they are always a student first and an athlete second. They understand the importance of their education and working hard in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. Sports are such a valuable experience for young people as it helps them to work with others, benefits their time management skills give them the opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zone to try new things and to foster meaningful relationships.
