My students have been in separate classrooms for the first several months of school. I will be coming into my classroom in January, taking small groups of students from each 2nd-grade classroom to form a new class. It will be a difficult transition for students to say goodbye to the teachers and classrooms they have come to love, then be immersed in a new classroom, so my goal is to make the transition as comfortable as possible. I want my students to know that they are coming into a classroom where they will feel safe and part of a community. I can do this by providing them with a classroom carpet that will serve as a common gathering place, shared storage materials, and a "share-chair" where students can sit and share work they've written, or just tell the rest of the class what's going on in their lives. I hope you can help me cultivate this sense of community within my classroom!
