Students will be engaging in an interdisciplinary expeditionary learning unit in which they will aim to help solve a community problem by making podcasts that bring awareness to an issue. Each year our 6th-grade students choose a different issue to focus on and bring community awareness to it through argument writing pieces, statistical analysis, design/art pieces, and podcasting. Podcasts are powerful storytelling tools, and student's voice is never more present than when students are the ones holding the mic, choosing the interview subjects, and telling the stories that matter to them from their own perspective. Using Radio Rookies and New York Times podcasting curriculum, students are equipped with the knowledge needed to design a story arc, interview effectively, and use editing techniques to produce professional-sounding podcast episodes. The Zoom recorders will allow multiple podcasting teams to do one on one and "vox pop" interviews to add to their podcasts. In previous years we've used our Chromebooks, but this led to poor sound quality and frustration when it came to editing. The professional recorders will allow students to be mobile and get high-quality audio in any setting.
