I teach Computer Technology to 6th-8th graders in a low-socioeconomic rural county. This year I decided to start the first-ever middle school volleyball team in our county. We have since had 3 other schools decide to start teams as well! There has been a great response and we have girls from 6th-8th grades interested in trying out for the team!
Most of our students have never seen volleyball played in-person and chances like this expose them to new opportunities to express athletic ability in ways they never have before. My biggest goal as a coach is to teach our students and players how to be on a team, how to put the needs of the whole above their own, coach them in the rules of volleyball, improve their skill, and increase exposure to volleyball in our county. I plan on taking them to watch a college volleyball game and bring in the high school volleyball team so that our students can watch them play.
We have no volleyball equipment at this moment for our first team. Our school has received a grant to purchase poles and a net, but we do not have the funds to purchase volleyballs for practices and games. I really do believe this is a tremendous opportunity for our county to grow in the exposure to volleyball and its rules, but also for girls who are not basketball players receive an opportunity to play a sport they can enjoy.
