Due to COVID students have been stuck inside staring at a screen. However, students are slowly beginning to return to school as families and teachers are being vaccinated and starting to feel safe with COVID numbers lowering in our area. Our district has approved our garden request and has even helped us access a water source and set up drip irrigation. For those that are in class and when they all return to school, my students will get outside and into the garden. Nature Deficit Disorder has taken an even greater toll on our students over the last year and they desperately need to get outdoors and dirty. School gardens have been shown to improve mental and emotional health as well as reduce stress and help improve student overall learning. As a science teacher, I will have students conduct experiments on the soil, biomass increases, and how soil biodiversity impacts crop growth success. We will also explore the carbon cycle and how regenerative agriculture can offset climate change.
The garden beds with the growing grid allow students to conduct experiments with the ability to change different variables for each plot.
This garden will not only impact students this year but for the next decade or more as they get more grounded and in touch with nature and themselves. Thank you for your time and generosity.
