During my instruction, I try to give my students independent reading time while giving others one-on-one instruction. The goal I am trying to achieve is to help these students build a stamina for reading by themselves. Engaged readers do not need to have a teacher stand over them refocusing them to read. The problem right now with my classroom is the seating. The students are not enjoying the hard chairs or tables and are choosing the cold hard floor to sit on. This option is just inviting disruptions. Nobody can focus on a book when they are so uncomfortable. I know myself as a reader, the first thing I want to do is find a comfy spot in the library or my home before I even open my book.
