Rango is our 8-month-old translucent veiled chameleon. He has outgrown his habitat and needs to move into a bigger habitat that is better suited to his size. His current habitat is not easily accessible and will soon be outgrown. Rango has become part of our class--students learn social-emotional skills along with science content as they observe and handle him each day. Students learn to care for others as they take care of Rango's needs and observe his actions. They are taught to put Rango's needs ahead of their own expectations. Rango is also essential to our science curriculum. Eighth-grade students study Rango's anatomy to discuss and observe the adaptations that help him survive in his environment. Sixth-grade students study Rango when they are learning about climates, comparative anatomy and organisms. Rango also encourages wonder and excitement in students. Students are eager to share Rango with their friends and families. This habitat will follow Rango throughout his life. It will go home with Rango on breaks and summers, and will remain with Rango if he ever moves schools or districts.
