In the world of elementary physical education, capturing all of my students' interest and eagerness to participate is crucial. Keeping all of my students engaged during their time in their physical education class, will lead them to be active not only during their PE time, but it will positively provide them with the skills to impact their recess, social relationships with their peers, emotional health and physical health. During my career, I have found a few topics that strike a positive note with all of my students, my yearly obstacle course and my badminton unit. The yearly obstacle course harnesses peer support skills, fitness improvement, mental toughness and perseverance. Each time I create the obstacle course, I try to keep the obstacle course exciting with a few new additions each year. My schools’ town is home to an American Ninja Warrior Champion and I believe that the addition of “Ninja” style challenges will capture their attention and fully engage all of my students. Other than obstacle course, my badminton unit is a big hit with all of my students. For many students, it is a new activity that they may have only seen but never played. It is a game that is fun to play, engaging for all, promotes lifelong activity and is relatively quick for the students to pick up as long as they have the correct equipment. My usual physical education equipment provider has recently stopped making the badminton racquets that I use to teach badminton. These racquets are critical for student success because the full size adult racquets are too complicated for elementary student use. These shorter racquets are a great modification that impacts all of my students' success rates.
