A classroom rug is a basic necessity for an early childhood education classroom. The rug with the color boxes is more than a soft place to sit! An important aspect of junior kindergarten is teaching young children about body awareness and personal space. The squares of this rug provide students with a visual reference that would otherwise be difficult for them to comprehend on a rug without clearly defined spaces. The rug is also an important part of classroom community building and classroom management. Students would be teamed up based on the color they are sitting on and/or are excused by row when lining up or going to their tables to work. In short, life happens on rugs like this and they are an invaluable tool for teachers like me. It is going to be very, very difficult to teach sitting properly on the ground for instruction without this rug.
