These materials will offer a greater level of hands-on activities for my students as we explore the chemistry (and some biology) behind the products we will include in our disaster-preparedness kit. Students will have daily writing themes to create a disaster narrative using the chemistry they discover in class. Chemistry content will cover 5 basic reactions and thermochemistry. Water purification is a great addition with cross-discipline value. We will be working with a community partner who is a deputy fire chief and program coordinator for search and rescue training. Students will share their final product with the community to raise awareness of disaster-preparedness.
