It is a momentous occasion for high school students to visit the college of their dreams. The importance of this experience is intensified when you have a student accessing a college that was made just for them and is comprised of students who look like them, communicate like them; people with whom they can relate to directly. A college where high school students can realistically grow into their whole potential. For Deaf students, Gallaudet University is this beacon. Deaf students would have firsthand exposure to their shared culture at one of the landmark sites of their shared language by visiting and, even just for a weekend, being a part of a historical centerpiece of Deaf culture and history. The takeaways for both groups of students is enrichment for their present classroom experiences, appreciation for the historical aspects of a cultural focal point, and a wide view of what they could anticipate in their future. An additional bonus for Deaf students would be seeing that people like them are able to attend college and are able to be successful as adults. They would see versions of themselves two to six years in the future and know that their story doesn’t have to end with high school graduation. They could connect with mentors and start building important relationships now in order to better prepare themselves for the future.
