This is my second experience as an Autistic Support Teacher within my 6 years of teaching. In both experiences, I have been at the forefront of adding these supports because the classroom environments have not been fully equipped with the best tools for my students.
In my current new position, I am the very first Autistic Support teacher hired within the district. As the year continues and I get to know my students better, I understand the additional materials and support that they require to be successful on a daily basis.
All of my students require some form of specially designed instruction, adaptations and modifications to their curriculum and their classroom environment in order to address their individual needs. Their individual needs involve deficits with social skills, attention needs, behavioral needs, coping skills and high sensory input needs throughout the day.
The materials I am requesting will help me provide my students with an appropriate learning environment that will truly set them up for success every day. All of my students are at different ability levels and require sensory input in different ways. Therefore, barriers and designated areas created by a divider within the room are crucial. We also need a weighted collar, headphones and other equipment to address their attention and sensory needs in an appropriate manner within the classroom that is not too distracting for others.
