Sports participation at an early age has countless benefits physically as well as emotionally that last well into a child’s lifetime. As a Physical Education teacher, I introduce students to many sports as well as other concepts throughout the school year. Students are often familiar with popular sports such as basketball and soccer, but it is rare to come across those who are familiar with the sport of hockey. Prominent sports are easily accessible because of the lack of equipment and space they require. As an educator, I feel capped at my ability to expand students’ knowledge of lesser-known sports due to limited access to materials. Basketball, for example, is seen played across many platforms including recreation centers and parks. A sport that requires an abundance of specialized equipment and even facilities such as hockey is usually seen confined to certain high-income neighborhoods. Having hockey equipment at our school will help students develop an awareness of a sport that is beyond those played in their neighborhood park. Unfortunately, our neighborhood is scarce of recreation centers and parks. Our students are filled with eagerness to participate and commit to an active lifestyle but need the knowledge and experience to expand their abilities. With our new hockey equipment, I will be able to teach students basic hockey skills such as stick handling and shooting, as well as increasing awareness of sports equality in the community. Students will understand that sports aren’t limited to spherical balls, just as their life isn’t limited to only what is readily available to them.
