My project is to purchase a starter set of 10 ukuleles for my students in grades 3 through 5 to use during music class. I would also purchase a set of new strings and wall brackets to store the instruments. Most of my students have never played a string instrument before, and the ukulele offers a wonderful opportunity for young hands to get acquainted with fretted string instruments. Sample activities could include partnering up and helping each other learn and play chords; playing chords, chord progressions, and entire songs alone and in a group setting; and performing in concerts on ukuleles. Ukuleles allow for ease in learning chords and chord progressions. My goal is to give each student the opportunity to play in order to encourage lifelong involvement in the arts.
