My students have been learning about music theory and note reading, and we are about to finish up a short electric keyboard unit. These students have expressed interest in learning guitar or ukulele, and I've chosen the ukulele because it's a great way to introduce chords and let them learn songs both independently and as a class. These ukuleles will provide many learning opportunities for students. Ukuleles are quieter, easier to play, and less expensive than guitars, and students can play them by themselves, in small groups, and as a whole class. They are portable and easy to store, making them great for performances at our small school. I was also planning on starting a ukulele club after school for students who want more time to explore the ukulele, learn new songs, and meet new friends. Playing an instrument can inspire students and teach both valuable music skills and social skills, helping students expand their knowledge and meet new friends. The ukulele is a great way to introduce and develop these skills to help students get to the next level as musicians.
