I am teaching the 7th and 8th grade students at West Middle School in Hartford. They have not had a permanent math teacher in 2 years, so their experience has primarily been computer programs and worksheets. When I first met them, I recited them a french poem and they loved it. We've also bonded on "fun Friday" afternoons where we dance salsa and bachata together. In addition to tradition lessons on exponents and linear equations, I have started them off with various geometry constructions using compasses as well as artistic applications of math such as curve stitching and drawing self portraits using the mathematical proportions of the face. Their defense mechanisms are still definitely in place, however they are learning new ways to take care of their community. They all have good hearts.
