I noticed a need for my students to get differentiated seating when they started asking if they could sit on the floor during reading time. I went out and got free rug samples to add to their comfort, and they loved it! Eventually I added pillows that another classroom was throwing out, and my students started requesting to do group work on them. I realized that our old-fashioned chairs prohibit the full movement necessary for collaboration due to their bulkiness and weight. Once I introduced the sample rugs and pillows, I saw that flexible seating was not only for their comfort, but it also provided a sense of agency among them since they got to choose where to sit. Funding this project will allow my students to finally get the seating they deserve and, therefore, be more calm, attentive, and collaborative in the classroom. Flexible seating allows for personalized learning because the environment caters to my second graders' need to move around and take ownership over how they can learn better. When I receive these tools, I plan on adding them to individual student's desks (those who need to move around more) and having a rotating seating schedule where they can change their seats when they need to re-focus. In our listening center I plan on adding the floor seats because my students enjoy listening to stories closer to the ground. I will add the Wobble Chairs to our math center in order to build community and optimize group work. Lastly, I will add the Balance Ball Seats to our writing center to encourage movement which has been proven to disrupt writer's block. I am incredibly excited to introduce these learning tools to my classroom and provide my students with the flexible seating they desperately need!
