We are teaching future leaders, doctors, presidents and teachers! As a school, we believe every student can do whatever they want when they graduate. To achieve that, we begin by teaching organization skills in 6th and 7th grade. Each student has a personal planner or agenda they are expected to track all of their assignments in.
When students are taught the "Why" behind what we are having them do they begin to take ownership of their learning and start to invest more into their education. I want to teach students how to use a planner effectively and efficiently. How taking one day, each week, to plan ahead can reduce stress and anxiety around their school work. I also want to give those students who love lettering, doodling and coloring a creative and productive outlet for that talent.
Using the highlighters, pens and markers will allow students to color code classes and assignments so they can quickly find what they need to. Stickers and washi tapes help mark upcoming tests, band lessons and due dates for projects. Also, it is fun and therapeutic! It is a great time to have guided discussions, to get to know my students on a different level and to teach the benefits of setting goals.
