The geode kits will allow students to have a hands on experience by cracking their own geode open and discovering what is really inside. The students will then be able to take their geode home, allowing the children to continue the conversation with their family. Providing students with real life experiences that build background knowledge is just one of the many goals we have in our afterschool program. The use of the Ocean Kit will bring the ocean to our students that may have never had the real life experience of being near a large body of water such as the ocean. Brining the ocean to the class allows for background knowledge about the earth and also exposes students to the discussion of why an ocean is different than a lake, pond or river. The Healthy Plants kit will allow children to have first hand experience with identifying where food comes from and how long the process can take. Gardening will provide the hands on experience of what is required to maintain the crops that are growing and allow the students to have a part in growing their own snack options.
