Each copy of Marlene Carvell's "Sweetgrass Basket" is 243 pages long, but the amount of empathy and knowledge gained by the reader is not quantifiable. As we try to build our curriculum around Social and Emotional Learning, we must incorporate diverse literature to better equip our students with the ability to recognize and understand multiple perspectives. This book shares a haunting story about a young girl and her sister who are Native Americans in the late 1800's who is sent from her reservation to an Indian Boarding School. While there, she is stripped of her culture and heritage and forcibly assimilated into "white culture." This novel is based on real events in American history. It is beautifully written in verse, and the content addressed will challenge students to think beyond their own experiences. Students will use the text to dive into the world of empathy, and learn vital communication skills by comparing modern events to what is happening in the story. Students will also use these books as primary resources for a research paper about Native American history in the United States.
