I am a bit like a mad scientist in the classroom; I am hyper alert and when I see an opportunity for a fun and exciting way to teach concepts, I jump on it. For instance, tomorrow my student who is DeafBlind will be dyeing my hair multiple colors. He loves hair, and it's a fantastic way to practice fractions and discover scientific concepts. So, when I discovered my students' interest in instant cameras, I jumped in head first. Now, we've used the cameras to create experience stories, for self expression and artwork through the making of zines (which were sold at a fall fair), to develop visual efficiency and vocational skills by working a photobooth at a school event, and to create a book of signs that use a particular ASL handshape for my student who is learning sign language. The use of the instant camera has taken off like wildfire, and I don't want it to stop! Unfortunately, the film is expensive, and I've exhausted both the classroom budget provided to me and much of my personal budget. In the words of Smokey the Bear, "ONLY YOU" can help us continue this journey of creativity, inspiration, expression, and growth!
