Robotics is a fun and creative way to launch kids into STEM learning at a young age! I hope to procure four different types of technology to support STEM learning in my first-grade class and set my students up for future STEM learning success. The proposed items are Logitech crayons, BeeBots, Sphero Mini, and Cubelets. A discussion of why each of these is useful learning tools can be found below. These tools will also be available to share with our entire student body as a building block for our robotics program. Logitech Crayons: This includes palm rejection technology so it’s okay if kids hands rest on the tablet as they write … just as if they are writing on a piece of paper. BeeBots: BeeBots are great starter robots! Beebots teach young children problem-solving, planning and sequential thinking in a spatial environment. They allow for very simple programing using buttons on top of the Beebot to tell it each specific step needed to follow a path the child defines for it. Sphero: While BeeBots are great robots for programming right on the robot, sphero mini is excellent to show how a robot can be controlled from an app. The programming is also simple, but it takes coding to the next level for new programmers. Cubelets: Cubelets take robotics to even greater heights by breaking a robot into parts that students can create on their own. The cubelets are color-coded and either “sense,” “think,” or “act” sections of the robot. Depending on how a student configures the pieces, the robot will perform different tasks. This is hands-on coding that can also be app-controlled if desired.
