One time, three years ago, I asked all my students what their favorite book was in a survey. I was shocked to find out that almost all of them, at the age of 12 or 13, didn't remember reading a full book. None of them owned a book. Many described not having much of their own after immigrating from another country. I want each of my students to have a book of their own. In English language classrooms, they are often subjected to grammar and spelling drills and short comprehension passages, but never find their way into a book to really enjoy. For these learners, I have found the greatest way they pick up language and vocabulary skills is by reading about things they enjoy. Access to a book at home is a huge deal. For the past 3 years, I have gotten to know my students, took a lot of time to pick out a book at their reading level and interest area for each of them, and then wrapped it up for them for the holidays. The kids absolutely love this tradition. Unfortunately, this year, without some help, I can't afford to buy all the books. Any assistance would be very much appreciated!
