In our district, library has traditionally been a time for students to come in with the class, listen to a story, and check out a book. While I love the opportunity to introduce students to new books, I found that our checkout times were lacking--long lines of students waiting for their turn to check out, several students wandering aimlessly waiting for direction, or just chatting with friends. The ineffectiveness of this time caused me to rethink our library time structure, and this year we introduced Library Centers. It has been exciting to watch the level of student engagement increase dramatically as they now have the choice to read, participate in activities relating to the books we read together, further their learning of library skills, and many other activities. Donating to our library centers will make them more exciting and impactful, and bring more hands-on and literary engagement activities to students. The materials I have selected will help students build classroom and real-world skills together. For example, using stick bots to create their own stop animation videos, students learn skills with presentation, collaboration, problem solving, and story building. Library centers also provide equitable access to skill building. A listening center with physical books to follow along helps students navigating reading skills, while in older groups, students may listen to podcasts to explore current topics or even be inspired to make their own. I also have a great opportunity to use these materials for extension activities. When we learn about library behavior with a ninja theme, we learn a little about Japanese culture with origami. Or our World Celebrations unit is a great time for students to make Kwanzaa bracelets. Your donation will provide students with a chance to dream, explore, and learn in new, unique ways!
