All of our middle school students have expressed a desire to build and create with LEGO, but when you mention combining LEGO with robotics, they are so excited! Using LEGO Mindstorm EV3 kits will help students to identify real-world problems and design ways to solve them. Students will build, create, revise, measure, estimate, and analyze all while doing something they love. Various sensors can help students engineer robots that react to a different variables, including sound, light, temperature, and distance. LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robotics kits will give my students so many opportunities to build, create, collaborate, and problem solve; all of which are skills needed for higher-education and job readiness. Approximately half of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and without opportunities to explore job skills and develop a love for learning, they risk being trapped in a cycle of poverty or under-employment. Currently, there are twenty-five students enrolled in our middle school STEM class, and approximately 450 students enrolled in our school. We have a very limited budget, so this would provide an opportunity for so many kids to use tools to which they would otherwise not have access. STEM lessons, especially those involving robotics, can ignite a spark in otherwise reluctant or disadvantaged learners. Research shows that students who have experience with Lego Robotics programs gain knowledge in computer coding and engineering fields. What better way to give students real skills while enhancing their love for learning and sparking creativity.
