Students with special needs need colorful and meaningful lessons that allow for hands on learning. For example, when I am teaching about a Food Web and have made cards with animals such as a red fox, a brown thrasher or a green frog, the use of color helps them learn to read the word. It also allows them to identify an animal picture as they would see it in the wild and not just black and white. When they are working on individual skills and need task boxes with pictures to show them how to complete an activity, color is vital. Coin identification and setting up a pretend store for them to acquire money skills becomes meaningful when they can transfer this to a real life situation. Our world thrives on color and not just black and white. We need to make learning as realistic for them as possible so they can be successful, independent adults.
