My students are Seventh Grade middle school students from single parent households and low incomes. They often are unable to experience things some of us take for granted. My students are intelligent who are very hands-on-oriented. If it isn't available to touch and feel then it really has little meaning and value to them. Having the rock and fossil samples will allow me to show them first hand what each of the types are and actually show them an example. Our school is located in a very poor part of the city where there are little funds for science equipment. Only the basic is provided. Most of the funding goes for reading and math because their skills are low in those areas. Giving them these experiences will create more enthusiasm and interest in science causing their state scores to increase.
